Does Your Team Have Everything They Need to Do Their Job Properly?

When was the last time you actually looked around your workplace and thought about what it’s like for the people working there?

Not just whether the office looks good.

But whether your team has everything they need to do their job properly.

Is their chair comfortable? Does their computer setup work for them? Is the printer constantly causing problems? Can they easily get the supplies they need? And if they’re working from home, have they got a proper setup there too?

They’re small things, but when you’re dealing with them every single day, they don’t always feel small.

At Office Essentials, we help businesses take care of the everyday things that keep a workplace running,  so your team can get on with what they do best.

People Don’t Just Leave Because of Their Manager

When we talk about why people leave jobs, it’s easy to immediately blame poor management.

Of course, management matters. But it’s only part of the picture.

Research involving 2,000 UK employees found that among those considering leaving their jobs, 17% wanted a better work-life balance and 16% wanted a less stressful job or more manageable workload.

Interestingly, 16% cited poor leadership or management, while 14% specifically said they didn’t like their manager.

In other words, people’s day-to-day experience of work matters.

And that’s something employers shouldn’t overlook.

Think About the Little Frustrations

We’ve probably all experienced them.

The printer that never seems to work when you need it.

The chair you can’t get comfortable in.

Working from a laptop all day without a second screen.

Realising you’ve run out of printer paper halfway through an important job.

Searching the stationery cupboard for something that isn’t there.

Trying to work with equipment that’s well past its best.

One problem probably isn’t going to make somebody hand in their notice.

But when little frustrations happen day after day, they can contribute to how somebody feels about their job and their workplace.

That’s why employee wellbeing isn’t only about big initiatives.

Sometimes it’s about making people’s working day that little bit easier.

Give People the Tools to Do Their Job

It sounds obvious, doesn’t it?

If you’re asking somebody to do a job, they should have the right tools and equipment to do it.

But workplaces change.

Teams grow. People move desks. Equipment gets old. More employees start working from home. Technology changes. What worked for your business three years ago might not work as well today.

That’s why it’s worth checking in every now and again.

Ask yourself:

  • Are our chairs and desks still suitable?
  • Do people have the right screens, keyboards and accessories?
  • Are home and hybrid workers properly equipped?
  • Is our printing setup making life easier or harder?
  • Do we regularly run out of basic supplies?
  • Are our kitchens and washrooms properly stocked?
  • Do employees have the right PPE and workwear?
  • Is there anything employees are regularly complaining about?

Better still – ask your employees.

They’ll probably tell you pretty quickly what’s making their working day harder than it needs to be.

Wellbeing Is About the Everyday Stuff Too

Employee wellbeing has become a big conversation over the last few years, and rightly so.

But it doesn’t always need to mean launching another wellbeing initiative.

The CIPD’s 2025 Good Work Index found that around one in four UK workers said their job negatively affected their mental or physical health.

The same research found that almost a quarter of employees regularly experience exhaustion and excessive pressure at work.

There’s obviously no single solution to that.

But creating a working environment where people feel comfortable, supported and properly equipped is a good place to start.

If someone spends hours every day sitting at a desk, their chair matters.

If someone works on a computer all day, their screen setup matters.

If somebody regularly works from home, their home-working setup matters too.

It’s all part of the employee experience.

And Don’t Forget Your Hybrid Workers

The workplace isn’t always one building anymore.

For many businesses, employees split their time between the office and home.

But there’s a big difference between being able to work from home and having a proper setup to do it comfortably.

A laptop on the kitchen table might work occasionally.

Five days of sitting hunched over it? Probably not.

And flexibility itself matters to employees.

CIPD research found that around 1.1 million UK workers had left a job during the previous year because of a lack of flexible working.

So if your business offers hybrid or home working, don’t just think about where people are allowed to work.

Think about how they’re working when they get there.

Is It Time for a Workplace Check?

Take five minutes today and have a proper look around.

Not from a manager’s point of view.

Look at your workplace from the perspective of someone who spends eight hours a day there.

What’s working?

What’s annoying?

What’s uncomfortable?

What’s constantly running out?

What’s taking longer than it should?

And what could make someone’s working day just that little bit easier?

You might find that a few relatively simple changes can make a noticeable difference.

Because looking after your employees isn’t always about grand gestures.

Sometimes, it’s simply about giving people the right tools, equipment and environment to do a good job.

And that’s exactly where Office Essentials can help.

From everyday office supplies and furniture to managed print, hygiene, PPE, workwear, tools and refreshments, we can help you keep your workplace stocked, equipped and running smoothly.

Your people have a job to do. Let us help you give them what they need to do it.
